Disclaimer!! This might be a hot take but this is purely my opinion. I side with no one in Marriage Story since I understood why it happened, and that each person had their flaws in their marriages. I also sympathize and care for both Nicole and Charlie, equally.
Also as an Adam stan, my opinions on this matter does not affect my adoration for him.
Why I started this thread: I was watching Schaffrillas Productionsβ video a few days ago about his Top 10 Movies of 2019, in which he categorized Marriage Story as a part of his list.
He stated in the video that it took him a little longer to care and sympathize for Charlie than Nicole. Although, I respect his decision and completely understand his take on the matter. I disagree with him, though. The first scene alone made me already care and sympathize.
I first watched Marriage Story around late December of 2019, a little after Christmas. I was feeling very blue since I just lost my dad, who I loved dearly, a few months beforehand.
Iβm not gonna dive that much about him, however. It is because the topic here is different, but his death did play a large part in my feelings toward Charlie.
During the movie, it was clearly shown to us how much Charlie loves his son. The first few scenes alone, in the montage of Nicole reading to us the letter about the things she loved about Charlie.
She even stated in the letter, βHe loves being a dad, he loves all the things youβre supposed to hate, like the tantrums, the waking up at nightβ. This first scene alone made me care for Charlie.
Another scene I would like to highlight, was when an appointed expert evaluator monitors a night in with Charlie and Henry. Charlie tried to show the woman that he was a good father, though he did slit his arm.
However, this scene showed us how much Charlie wants to have more time with his son after the divorce.
Youβre probably thinking, didnβt he cheat on her? Wasnβt he holding back on Nicoleβs dreams and ambitions? The answer is yes, he did. That, however, does not change my sympathy for him. It just shows how flawed Charlie is. Itβs not like Nicole was a saint either.
Like I said, I sympathized and cared for both, equally. I have no sides here, Iβm just stating why, since the beginning, I already had these feelings for Charlie.
Where my dad plays the picture in my take on this, was because he was a flawed person and father, but he deeply cared for me. He always had my back no matter what, and always saved the day. Yes, I was a daddyβs girl. Seeing Charlie caring for Henry made me miss my dad.
Like Charlie, he was flawed but he always was there for me. I never once felt that he was missing out on anything about life. At times, we would even fight about him because he was a bit nosy, but I understood of course that he was just worried about me.
In conclusion, Charlie is a flawed character, he cheated and he was selfish. Though he always was there for Henry. Not all fathers are like that. Henry and I are lucky that we got to experience the love of a father, well I used to. That is why I sympathize and care for Charlie.
Please donβt attack me about this, this is just how I view Charlie. The part about my father is not for clout or for you to feel sympathy for me. It just played a part in my feelings.
Anyways, treat people with kindness, and watch Marriage Story if you havenβt yet! Itβs a good movie that made me cry every time I viewed it.
