Short thread about running. Pre-pandemic, I ran 3 or 4 times a week. I used to run everyday, but having a dog and a kid put a crimp in that. But regardless — running was not only my main source of exercise, but also really helped unlock writing problems. 1/
I haven’t been doing much writing since the pandemic hit, so I hadn’t realized how much my writing was linked to my running. But now that Supergirl’s on hiatus, I’m turning my attention to some side projects. And I’ve been struggling with one story point for over a week. 2/
I just couldn’t crack it, and was starting to wonder which of my writer pals I was going to bug to talk it through. But this morning, being a holiday, gave me a chance to go for a run. Probably only my third run since we went into lockdown. 3/
As I ran, without even intending to, I started thinking about that story problem. And with the blood pumping, as I thought, all the different pieces finally assembled into a shape that works! I fixed the problem without even really intending to. 4/
I guess my broader point, if I have one, is a lot of times, the way to solve a story problem is to concentrate on something else for a bit, or change your environment (easier said than done right now). Just find whatever process works for you... and trust that process. 5/5
