Piñata by Freddie Gibbs & Madlib : A Thread

6 years onward,Piñata is still one of the best rap albums of the last decade, and is undoubtedly a high watermark in both of the artists' discographies. The artists,of course, being widely acclaimed production god Madlib and Gary gangsta Freddie Gibbs.
Madlib's instrumentals have that unmistakable dusty,rough-around-the edges quality to them, and this quality is what helps the varied samples on this album come together cohesively.
Speaking of samples, they are just as obscure, just as diverse as they were on his masterpiece Madvillainy ; how he manages to find this shit is and always will be beyond me.
Props to Freddie in the production too ; he may not have made the beats himself but knowing what to choose from the hundreds of beats that Madlib undoubtedly made for this project requires special intuition.
Freddie's lyrics and delivery on this thing is energetic, dejected, enraged and pretty much every other emotion you can think of. On Deeper,by far his best lyrical showcase yet, he laments the end of a relationship in vivid colour.
Meanwhile Shitsville is what every single anti-hater song ou there should be ; Freddie goes for the throat of anybody who dares judge him and makes sure they know that they aren't any better.
On Broken he mournfully admits that he's fucking up but also makes it known that there just wasn't another choice ("7 bucks an hour wasn't good enough"). And Real is a complete excoriation of Young Jeezy.
I think the constant shifts in tone here are a depiction of the constantly changing nature of life itself (gangsta or otherwise),and how we change ourselves as we become more and more aware of the consequences of our choices.
Whereas Madvillainy felt like a comic book,Pinata feels like a film, complete with skits that paint a perfect picture of where the album is headed with each track. It's a very thrilling journey from beginning to end.
