Last thread.....all this great stuff is going on on farms in Cumbria, but often the media perception is that upland farmers are wrecking the landscape. So- we have to tell people about the good stuff. Thread....
I started by writing poems about farming. These were published in @lancashirelife and @CumbriaLifeMag. I then wrote an ‘opinion’ piece for the Guardian. It’s my ‘pinned tweet’, have a look. I was also asked to be a columnist for @CumbriaMagazine that my family had loved for years
I was keen to get information about mountain breeds of sheep online, so produced a website for @RoughFellSheep and started their twitter account for them. Following on from this I was asked to make other websites for other breed societies.
I was keen to write about life on the farm in a positive way to tell people about what it is actually like to live on an upland farm in Cumbria. Working with the very supportive @BooksHayloft I have published 4 books so far. You can find them in my Etsy shop or @BooksHayloft
These books are the main way that I can tell people about the work we do, along with instagram/Twitter etc.
Together will @billplumtree we have produced a series of features for @CumbriaMagazine about hill farming. Bill’s brilliant photos tell the stories, I just add a few words to tie them together.
In 2019 I became the farming officer for the @lakedistrictnpa. Part of my job is to ‘tell the story’ of uplands farming. Be a voice for farming, but also feed the farmers views back to the authority. It’s just about the best job in the world when I get to go to shepherds meets
Thank you to everyone who has helped me ‘get the message out’ along the way- @BooksHayloft @CumbriaMagazine @lakedistrictnpa @lancashirelife @CumbriaLifeMag @FarmersGuardian @guardian
