After an intro by @paulanthony_g, Divij Joshi ( @divijualsuspect) kicks off...

What is #censorship, what are the problems involved when the government decides to step in?

He starts with a few stories from the #censorship of #BurhanWani, to annoyed tweeps moving to #Mastodon!
"All platforms govern speech, #contentmoderation is at the heart of every #digitalplatforms.

The question isn't if platforms are policing #onlinespeech, it is about how they are doing it," @divijualsuspect iterates.

So how do platforms decide on & apply these rules?
In short, #digitalplatforms moderate/filter/allow/recommend content constantly.

There are filters for hateful, racist, abusive content.

Platforms moderate content for commercial logic, to create safer communities, and as a response to laws!

@divijualsuspect @thuscritique
#ContentModeration models include:

1. Bespoke: tailored for a tool/platform
2. Community-based: where communities define & enforce certain rules
3. Industrial: legal compliance by the big players

@divijualsuspect adds a few examples, as also some high-profile cases of misuse!
#Contentmoderation is a #democratic, constitutional question.

Yet as we take to the digital sphere, we are delegating more responsibility to private platforms (boardroom execs rather than the government)!

"That's why #intermediaryliability is crucial," @divijualsuspect adds!
. @divijualsuspect feels that #contentmoderation isn't necessarily a tech-issue but a social one!

Might this explain why the #Mastodon exodus didn't quite take?

@paulanthony_g chimes in with questions:

How do communities think about #freespeech?
What redressal mechanisms exist?
Audience questions flow in...

Where do we draw the line between the platform vs the individual's responsibility when posting content?

Platforms cannot be held responsibility for the content, but it should be accountable for the #contentmoderation tools, @divijualsuspect adds.
