Why would anyone believe in X, if X doesn't benefit them?

There was an news report I read about a Xtian Pastor who installed a borewell in a village with limited water supply. He installed it within the Church's walls and only Xtian villagers could draw water from it. Why did he do so? https://twitter.com/CutieMonkey3/status/1264888712036564992?s=19
Why didn't he try to convince those ignorant, illiterate villagers about the superiority of Xtian scripture or traditions? Did he not have enough faith in the Xtian God and Christ? Was he ignorant about what the Bible says?
