"Lingala or French" really? French? Blood of Jesus. "Internalised lack of pride" is not what stops people learning languages. Blood of Jesus I am so tired. https://twitter.com/Adelinekiesa01/status/1264704095291613190
French, a coloniser language, is the yardstick you're using to assess which African country is more in-tune with their indigenous cultures? Okay. As if Nigerians can't speak their own coloniser language..? Kewl. Anyways.
Here's a great thread by @Habibakatsha on the Congolese side of things, which explains why the above statement is *wild*. https://twitter.com/Habibakatsha/status/1264867794451079168?s=20
As for Nigeria, there are more languages than Yoruba or Igbo (are there not 400+). There's more ethnicities, too. Not everyone will fit into a limited understanding of what 'Nigerian' is, based on what is diaspora kids have been exposed to.
Understand what colonialism means, the ways in which borders were created, the people who were separated, those who were "united", and understand the difficulty of passing down a language in an environment which not only doesn't speak it, but actively discourages it with FORCE!
