Lesson for those who don’t know the importance of the roaring twenties to the world of today. We owe them of a lot of acknowledgement.
Feminism, sex & LGBTQ+ liberation emerged with a new face in the 20s to normalize most of what today, simply is.
The part I love most in the 20s? The badass Flappers who defied everything expected of a woman. They were women who redefined womanhood, jazz, liquor, sex parties (the infamous “petting” parties), femme fatale films, sex icons. Women taking control of their sexuality.
Women in the 20s were drinking & smoking, throwing away their corsets for looser, shorter underwear & dresses that allowed them the movement needed to dance to the new music of the Jazz Age. (“Cabaret” was the most well-known portrayal of the era.)
With the help of Coco chanel’s “garçonne look” of course, & every other look Coco changed the portrayal of women with. Flappers were young, fast-moving, fast-talking, reckless & unfazed by previous social conventions or taboos. Look at this fucking badass istg.
Short hair was all the rage as women broke free even more of expected feminine behavior at the time. What was most notable about the 20s was how open & free & widespread every form of newly found liberation & trend was.
The most famous flapper of all was Zelda Fitzgerald. Before marrying the novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zelda spent her nights whirling around country club dances with young Alabama gentlemen & was an inspiration & idol for all women to go after what they want & enjoy.
After their marriage in 1920, the hard-partying couple lived the ultimate Roaring Twenties lifestyle TOGETHER in both NYC and France which contributed immensly to the already changing definition of what a relationship between a man & woman was.
The perception of marriage slowly changed from dependency & spouse obligations, to a partnership. Zelda was Scott’s muse in his writings that portrayed the strong liberated woman in the roaring 20s lifestyle & her inspirations to be more & affect more.
The 20s were when women got their right to vote. The 20s were when women, fought to prove themselves worthy of political positions. Women in the 20s entered the workfield. Even if it was still “feminine” workfields that paid less, we owe them the rough kickstart.
We need to appreciate the wilderness & beauty & strength of the women who changed so much & accelerated the pace of feminism & women’s freedom of choice within the 10 years they had a chance to do so.
between the horrors of the 1910s & the depression of the 1930s, the 20s? The 20s were an era of women strength & capability to change so much regardless of having more ahead for feminists. The 20s are an inspiration for us to do more, to fix more, because this is not enough.
As for LGBTQ+ in the 20s? The literal gay capital emerged. The 20s took the LGBTQ+ ten steps forward in the road of acceptance.
