Still, there is one major difference between the U.S. and other countries with huge outbreaks (Italy, Spain). It’s the willingness to impose a severe, initial lockdown. This not only slows the virus, but also widens the margin for error during the restart.
This is the step the U.S. has been unwilling to take. A painful period where people almost entirely stop leaving their homes and the virus is dramatically slowed. It’s probably too late for that to ever happen now.
Remember, in March, Italy and Spain were the countries whose path the U.S. was trying to avoid. But now, they are restarting their economies in conditions where the virus is less present than it is in the U.S.
