The reason this is making it into the international media is the white-hot fury of the British public. And imho the reason people are so angry isn’t because Dominic Cummings traveled to Durham while sick (although that’s irresponsible and maddening) 1/
It’s because the government has supported and defended him, while holding the public to a different, higher standard. People have made terrible sacrifices and endured awful hardship and that makes this even harder to bat this away as “political”
The “one rule for them and another for us” is a much more more damning charge, especially for a government that champions “standing up to the elites” - sentiments that aren’t unique to the Brexit supporters in the UK
I suspect if the government had admitted what Cummings did was wrong, albeit understandable, and had offered an apology, this wouldn’t be making the headlines 3 days later on France 24, Al Jazeera and the Straits Times. Dominic Cummings would probably still have his job too
The entire public has rallied behind the government for the sake of the country. The terrible sacrifices made have come from Remainers and Brexiteers alike, Left and Right. The fury is felt across the spectrum.
