the Tory/Neoliberal belief that people wouldn't "obey" lockdown rules, even though we were already self imposing them, because "British people value our freedom" comes from the same place as the belief that we wanted austerity, that we wanted our society to be run like a business
This metacrisis and the crises within it should explode the myths the Tories project on to us. That we're homegeneous, that we are above all "The British" and exceptional for that and we're libertarian in all the Right ways. That we're all, at our core, Julias and Tobys and Toms.
But will it? Will scales fall from enough eyes? Will there be enough, a critical mass, of people looking at themselves in the mirror, rather than the Mail, and waking up, as we did in the 1940s, to the fact that we don't have to spend our lives bent into the shape they want us.
Will the fog clear for enough people to see behind the curtain, that the Tories don't stand for most of what they project at us. They don't obey the rules they impose, they don't conserve, they rip up the fabric, they remake us, who were are, where we live, how we live.
They wrap themselves in flags but they sold what we owned, they project "The British People, indomitable, exceptional" but they sacrifice us in our thousands, to ill health, poverty, depression, despair, as a matter of routine, as a way of life, before this virus upped the stakes
Will enough pennies drop, while the badly paid and badly protected work on in a war zone, and the rest of us are 20% worse off, or more if you're the kind of self reliant "entrepreneur" they've also tried to turn us all into while living off our labour, our land and the profits
"Stay in your home" they project at us, which means having to temporarily suspend a society that functions by turfing so many out of their homes, feeling we'll never really have a home, just a place. While they flit, or trek, or drive 260 miles to another of their properties
"Many of our loved ones will die before their time" Will enough people stop and think "this happens anyway". And listen to the health professionals, not the Health Ministers and Advisers who've given us a marketised system that can't cope by endlessly projecting "markets" at us
People "die before their time" because we live in a "market society", a "flexible labour market" that strips away rights, protections, income and the will to say no when we should, for our health and well being. Strips away the collectivity and projects individualism at us.
People die before their time because the air isn't clean enough - and now we can breathe how it be - and because the transport systems have been gutted and filleted for profit, people die on the roads, people die in a rush and a crush, in this society full of "freedoms"
They said support systems for our heath and welfare "simply aren't affordable", projected at us and on to us, that we agreed with this, that we didn't need it. Then layers of it were rebuilt overnight. To stop us dying. And we demand more. Will enough people keep up that demand?
Will enough people see this isn't about one man "not fit to be Prime Minister", one adviser "who thinks rules aren't for him". This is all of a piece, this is a culture, this is the ideology that sits behind the "common sense". Boris is Dave, Dominic is George. Tear them all down
