Rama has announced that from October until March 2021, cars will not be allowed on Sundays in the country “as a time dedicated to smoke-free air”.
I like this idea! Many cities in Albania are flat which makes them perfect for biking. I think that we must use bicycles and public transport instead of cars. Also, it would be better if we generally walked more. We’ll improve our own health and that of the planet as well.
However, we need a good and functional strategy for this idea to be implemented correctly. Rama did not tell us which is the government’s or the municipalities’ strategy towards this implementation so that it benefits everyone equally.
Moreover, we need a decent and functional public transport. The mayor of Tirana has simply raised the public transport’s fee while the conditions remain horrible. We just pay more now for the same suffocating conditions.
On the other hand, we need more bike lanes that are spacious enough everywhere in the city. We also need more green spaces like parks, instead of cement and money-laundering towers.
Most importantly: we demand real green policies instead of propaganda and transparency on every public institution’s project and decision.
What has happened during these 7 years of governance is that railway stations were demolished instead of being reconstructed in a modern way and then put into use.
Parks were destroyed and their space was mainly sold to private businesses and later, turned into a fancy money-laundering tower or a building where we have no access to because the prices went immediately up.
Rivers like #Vjosa and #Valbona are endangered because of the greed of a few oligarchs and politicians for more capital. #Deforestation continues in #Albania in a frightening manner and both the #Adriatic and #Ionian sea are polluted on a daily basis.
Protected areas like the Lagoon of Nartë, are in the black list of being destroyed completely so that a new private-public-partnership opens the way for more concrete and pollution via the building of an airport that we do not need.
The cities are transformed in such a way that they are unrecognizable and make us feel alienated. #Tirana itself looks like a construction site. There's just more corruption, more towers, misery and death. All of this has happened under the blessing of Rama's governance.
This is the reason why I am very skeptic when #Rama or #Veliaj present a "green policy" to us. We need real green and progressive policies but a neoliberal and corrupted government cannot offer this kind of development to us.
