On Eid, sharing the pic of the oldest mosque in India, the Shrine of Ibrahim, built in Bhadreswar, Gujarat. Incorrectly, in most textbooks Qubbat al Islam mosque in Mehrauli is taken to be the oldest. Ibrahim's mosque was built in 1159 AD. Mosque is dated by inscription
The mosque was built in the most Jain-esque style ever, note the pillars and ceiling and built to facilitate the Ismaili settlement that carried forward the bulk of trade in Gujarat (Caste hindus didnt since caste restrictions did not permit most to cross the sea)
Fascinatingly, the mosque is locally known as the Lal Shahbaz Qalandhar's dargah. Notice the grave in the pic? It is said to be of Lal Shahbaz (the guy in dum a dum mast qalandhar) but it is incorrect. His grave is in Sehwan. This is probably the patron's grave?
Yet, the most interesting bit about this is that the land for the mosque was probably provided by Somnath trust. Why, you ask? Ismailis were good to do business with, profitable merchants travelling to Hormuz etc. Somnath was an economic institution, benefitted from the trade
Please read oldest here as oldest extant mosque.
