I've been cooking a lot for my elderly mother lately, and this rant about poor kitchen design has been bubbling up ... so here goes. 1. In-built sink strainers to keep all the gunk out the drain. They don't do the task for which they were designed.
This is the kind of sink strainer I'm talking about. All recent kitchens seem to have them. Do not work! When you open them, gunk slips down the side. The gaps only catch some detritus. An old-fashioned $1 job is 100 x more efficient. https://images.app.goo.gl/SoWPg5ojPkCuLAHa8
2. Gas stove tops burners (again this is recent models). The low setting is too high for a gentle simmer or a slow cook. I turn the dial back through high to get to the little flame. Can only have been designed by someone who never cooks. NEVER COOKS
3. Microwave ovens and their ridiculous settings. You know all those buttons which make assumptions about what you're doing and require you to know the weight of stuff. It's just not possible to get one with simple, adjustable settings any more!
Does anyone use those stupid buttons on the microwave? Why has this maladaptive feature continued to grow and crowd out the useful functions? Again, these functions seem to have been designed by people who have no idea how cooking works!
