Right, today's #History time machine takes us back to what was then Danzig in 1941, where #WW2 had begun two years earlier. What passed for a normal and peaceful life in this backwater was still evident, before the storm of warm engulfed and destroyed most of the city in 1945.
9/ Final two photos in this thread from 1941. It's interesting to think that as well as Gauleiter Albert Forster being somewhere here, so was a 14-year-old Günter Grass, one of my favourite writers, who was born in Danzig in 1927.
10 and final/

Gdańsk is now once more a Polish city. Unlike Kaliningrad (Königsberg), this city has been miraculously and beautifully reborn from the ashes. It is a wonderful and welcoming European city, one of my favourites travel venues. Do go, if you can.
