I have to say I love the fact that the default engineer in #SFF these days is just Kaylee Frye. We see it in The Outer Worlds. We see it in Becky Chambers' books. Even Star Trek Discovery did it. The book I just started reading is doing it too. It just makes me really happy.
And it's not that these characters aren't still their own characters either. I mean these characters are very different from each other let alone all being exact copies of Kaylee. But you can see the influence. #SFF
I don't know. I for one am here for our new quirky, optimistic space engineer overlords. Like this is definitely a trope I'm all for. It's just an interesting dynamic I've been noticing in #SFF that's come out in the last five or so years.
Like for a while the character archetypes from Firefly that were influencing people seemed to be Mal and River. And not that there's not still that out there. But there's been a noticeable shift. #SFF
And I don't know. Maybe that says something about us. Maybe we're embracing out quirkiness a little bit more than we used to. Maybe we're longing for a little bit more optimism in our lives. #SFF
Either way. If you're a #SFF writer thinking about putting a Kaylee Frye esque engineer into your work I guess this thread is my way of telling you do it.
