I'm told there's a studio sending out a pilot outline I wrote as an example of a great outline (they didn't pick up my show, sadly), & I recently wrote an outline & didn't get notes on it so I'm feeling in the zone w outlining. So if it's useful, u may reply w outline questions.
Most of what i think makes a great outline, I already talked about in the talk i gave a few weeks ago on coming up w your take on material. But I'll answer what i can describe (a bit tough in this format) in the hopes of making outlining & this biz a bit more accessible.
My pilot pitch/outline game improved significantly after reading Noah Hawley's pitch document for FARGO. It's here at this link with other documents writers wrote to sell hit shows. Check it out. https://www.carolekirschner.com/blog/series-bible
If you can dig it up, the 1st season/pilot True Detective pitch doc is also bananas good, obviously for the brilliant structure, but also the sheer astounding level of confidence on the page describing the vision.
My 1st visit to LA, Debora Cahn who I knew via theater gave me a quick tour of either the West Wing or Grey's writing suite. I asked her what newly staffed writers could be better at. Without missing a beat she replied: "Outlines." (That's what you'll spend 1/2 your time writing)
