sorry friends I make these tweets and then realize from the replies how uh. big this problem is when I can say to every bit of reasonable advice “actually I tried that and it ended badly” or “no, no one will step in for me.” I am still learning how much I’ve been failed.

really always um shaken thinking about the number of students in really toxic / abusive situations who will never know the full scope because they lacked the outside perspective, comparative experiences, language to articulate their suffering to fully realize it.

toxic PIs 100% absolutely are aware of this and latch onto typically first-gen women / of color & immigrants & international students knowing their gratitude AND lack of experience AND/OR likely systemically abusive experiences in other workplaces will make them accept abuse

anyway thank you for lending me the words, insight, and kindness to realize that no I don’t have to take it and yes it really is bad. that is worth its weight in gold.
