Of course it’s not really just about the fact that subways exist here, it’s the maddening erasure of so much of the city, including many of the people who are still getting sick.
To be fair, the essay doesn’t actually say LA doesn’t have subways — that’s solely in the tweet. (Piece puts a slightly finer point on it, saying LA “doesn’t have much in the way of virus vectors like subways..” )
And both the role the NYC subway has played in transmission, as well as the role LA’s car culture has likely played in a slower curve, are very real things and should be wrestled with. I don’t mean to minimize that. But... You get what I mean.
