I’m kind of just accepting that I’m not drawing as much these days and that’s okay!
I have depression so some days I am just NOT up for drawing. No ideas, no motivation. But when I’m feeling inspired I make lots of notes and sketches so I can come back to them later.
I also have to manage hand and wrist pain so it’s important to be okay with the fact that I might not be able to draw every day.
Some days you just want to zone out and ink and color. Some days are going to be good writing days. It’s good to listen to what your body/mind wants to do that day.
There are caveats! I hate the narrative of artists just waiting around for inspiration. Comics, in particular, is a lot about the grind. It’s a long process. But there are things you can do to make that grind easier!
Setting my deadlines a week before they’re actually due helps me a lot. That way, if I have a bad depression day, or even a bad drawing day, I can walk away.
Another thing that helps is having various projects in different stages. That way, if your inking game is just bad one day, you can switch to sketches or thumbnails, which are looser and work a totally different part of your brain.
This can be within the same project too. Maybe you jump to a different chapter.
Of course these tips aren’t for everyone! I’m pretty privileged, since I’m lucky to have a day job and my income doesn’t rely solely on comics.
But having a day job also means I have to delegate my free time wisely. When is it going to be productive to work and when should I just relax and recharge?
