If, back in February, Trump had made a TV appearance in the East Room flanked with Nancy Pelosi and Mitch McConnell and said we were going to take certain measures to combat coronavirus, started cutting checks, and put the economy to sleep, he’d be cruising to reelection.
All he would’ve had to do is actually be the populist he pretends to be for 3-4 months, made a couple of hard decisions, and showed a united front with Democrats and Republicans, there’s no way he’d be below 50% approval right now. He could’ve made this is 9/11. But it’s Waterloo
But, instead of pretending to want to do the right thing, even if it could’ve saved his own ass, Trump went with the will of the twitter bots and trolls and decided to do the most irrational thing possible. Now we have ~100,000 dead and an economic depression. All preventable.
This is the inherent and fatal flaw of Trumpism. It puts Trump first and makes Trump’s whims, no matter how irrational or detached from reality, above all else. They’re so caught up in the short term demands of their donors that they’ve destroyed the long term health of the party
