One clear difference I’ve noticed between Issa and Molly: Issa seems to lean on people when she’s feeling challenged or uncertain. Molly leans on herself and lashes out at people in frustration. #InsecureHBO

Issa and Molly’s dynamic worked because Issa could always lean on Molly, and Molly could more or less expect Issa to “get” her without having to be super vulnerable. #InsecureHBO

But, when the dynamics shifted aka Issa became more self-reliant and Molly allowed herself to become vulnerable (because true vulnerability is unpredictable and is not filtered), that’s when the problems escalated in their friendship. #InsecureHBO

I don’t think Molly or Issa are wrong per se—yes, some of their individual actions are fucked up but I think they’re both ultimately shifting into new identities and the transformation period between an old identity and a new identity is always a messy ass period. #InsecureHBO

It’s interesting that for Issa, stepping outside of her comfort zone meant taking on the role as helper/provider, i.e. attempting to buy groceries for the pregnant woman, offering that man a ride, sharing her wine with the group of girls. #InsecureHBO

Because the provider role is not really Issa’s default setting, she seemed to lack proper judgement/boundaries in all three scenarios. She went from being the leader to getting her ass led real fast in all three scenarios lol. #InsecureHBO

Molly’s default is to take charge/put her guard up. Stepping out of her comfort zone was: letting Andrew’s brother plan the trip, following Andrew’s lead even when she was tired/cranky, and calling her therapist when she felt herself slipping into old habits. #InsecureHBO

Molly wasn’t in control with the towel situation. Andrew’s brother had to make it right, making Molly feel weak. So she regressed, lashed out, and pushed ppl away (much like Issa regressed to being “led” once things became too much for her to handle). #InsecureHBO
