It’s really easy to say “people send their kids to charter schools because the state schools suck!” If you also ignore that one of the reasons state schools struggle is the money taken from them by charter schools that make false promises (not an expert on this but, Michigan)
the debate about charter schools reminds me a lot of arguments about private schools (which I know still exist but I feel like they're smaller in number maybe, I rarely hear about them anymore). People think it will be better, but there's no guarantee your math teacher knows math
I worked with a black woman in the 2018 elections who, within her long career before that gig, had gone to harvard and taught at a few different places, including charter schools here in Minneapolis. Her stories were BAD
For example, she was teaching science one year to I think seniors or maybe juniors? This school was predominantly black if not all black. She wanted them to use microscopes in class- like the kind I used in school, basic ones- and the administrators didn't want them to.
Mind you, they HAD this equipment. Stored away in boxes. And she was told they they shouldn't use them in her class because the students wouldn't know how to USE them and it would hurt their feelings.
These were high school upperclassmen.
The impression I got from her was that there was a LOT of racism going on, and paternalism, and not a lot in the way of age- or grade- appropriate instruction. And no, unfortunately I don't have the school name, but this woman's not a liar.
(she also sued Caribou successfully for racism, which is a story that I think she was going to write a book about? Oh Linda, where are you now)
