Muslims have made the comment before that it is not the teachings of Jesus and Muhammad That differ. But rather it is Islam and Christianity that are diametrically opposed to each other. Now when analyzed closely we see that the teachings of Muhammad and Jesus are not the same.
The most often pointed to passage is Mark 12:28-34 as Jesus teaching pure monotheism by confirming the schema of Israel found in Deuteronomy 6:4. But this is only short sighted insight when ignoring Johns Gospel.
Our Lord Jesus Christ definitely did not teach monotheism the same way Muhammad did. The Lord said His Father is incomprehensible and can only be revealed by Him, the Radiance of the Father's glory and His Word and Image. He is the VISIBLE Image of the INVISIBLE God.
We can only know God truly through Him. Likewise, He is incomprehensible and only known by His Father and the Spirit. This shows the united and singular nature of the Godhead.
All things have been handed over to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires to reveal Him. Muhammad did not teach any of this.
Now that it has been shown that the Monotheism taught by Jesus differed from that which Muhammad taught. We will turn to the concept of a meditator which is found in both Judaism and Christianity. Penal substitutionary atonement is found in both.
That Jesus is the sacrificial lamb who stoned for us via the crucifixion is the driving point behind the new covenant and the book of Hebrews. The idea of having a mediator is not found in Islam. Islam teaches that you pray directly to God.
That no one is needed to intercede or mediate for you on your behalf. You approach God directly for forgiveness. And this idea is unique to Islam and not found in Judaism or Christianity which both teach penal substitutionary atonement.
Look at exodus 29 and Leviticus 5 for more information on penal substitutionary atonement in the OT.
Now Jesus teachings also differed from Muhammad for He taught that we are not given in marriage during the resurrection. There are no pure spouses or houris per the Bible. Also Jesus taught to love your enemy and to treat apostates with love.
Jesus Christ taught pure agape love which is what Christianity is all about. You love your neighbor as yourself. Whereas Islam teaches love for Muslims only. This is similar to the mentality that Jews had in the OT.
Now much can be said of how Jesus and Muhammad differed in their teachings. But my goal was not to run through the entire Gospel. I only wanted to highlight a few key differences.
