We’re approaching the end of intern year and I am officially finished with inpatient floors. Looking back, it’s been a wild ride but I’ve learned so much. Here are my top 10 lessons via twitter thread.
1. Day 1 may be scary but it gets easier. Don’t be overwhelmed. Make a checklist, use pretty pens or highlight the crap out of stuff. Find your “thing” and stick to it. You’ll eventually catch a rhythm and get into a work flow. You can handle this.
2. As the intern, CALL EVERYONE. Call your own consultants, they have so much to teach you, soak it all in. Call your patient’s families, they are constantly worried and that one 15 minute convo is all they have. Call YOUR family, they miss you…a lot.
3. POCUS is an amazing resource to have on the wards. I’m a true believer now. It’s so satisfying to watch the fruits of your diuresis labor. I kind of want butterfly, hey @ButterflyNetInc can I get a coupon code??
4. Being comfy on your long call days is key. If you’re stuck there for 12+ hours, you better have a soft sweatshirt (with your health system logo) to curl up in and write your H&Ps.
5. Contrary to what you might think, no one knows everything. You may know something that others may not know. Learn from one another, don’t compete.
6. No, you don’t have to read every single night and your co interns are not doing it either. Sometimes, you just need a night to relax and binge watch the Office for the 7385839 time. Do what you can.
7. It’s ok to cry, we all do it. In our cars, stairwells and bathroom stalls. Take a moment for yourself and as Elsa says “Let it go”. ❄️
8. Lean on your co interns for support. They understand your struggles, your successes and your failures. If you’re having a crappy day, talk to them. Chances are, they need to talk it out too.
***MOST IMPORTANT***
9. Take a moment of silence for each of your patients who pass away. It’s easy to compartmentalize and move on, but each patient will touch your life in some way, good or bad. Remember them and the life they lived.
10. And finally, first year goes by in the blink of the eye and even after all the complaining about the 30,000+ notes you’re writing and hours of pre rounding you’re doing, you just might miss those hectic but fabulous days of intern year.
And with that, I’m out. I have some more but if I don’t finish this case report that I’ve been telling my husband I was going to do last week, he may ask me to clean something around the house…yikes. ✌🏽🤍☕️
