1/ I've FINALLY realised why I've felt somewhat numb & bewildered to all this Cummings stuff

On a scale of Cummings/Tory behaviour, a drive to Durham pales in comparison to the Windrush, deportations, austerity, Grenfell, hiring eugenicists, unlawfully proroguing Parliament etc
2/ So, to see Twitter and the press go apoplectic over his journey/Johnson's response felt a bit random

People died because of Windrush, austerity, Grenfell & there is still so little accountability - yet Cummings takes trip or two to Durham and everyone loses their minds
3/ On top of that, to see so much of Twitter become nasty and cruel over the trip to Durham was also weird and disorientating

So yeah, that's my final two cents on all of this

If Cummings' trip to Durham is what stirs the nation into action more than mass deportations...
4/ ... then fine.

If Cummings' trip to Durham is what makes people wake up to what the govt are like rather than people starving to death while waiting for Universal Credit, then fine

But it speaks volumes that it is *this* issue that has enraged people and the press
5/ I've been wondering for days why this felt like such an overreaction, and now I know why!

And I ask people and the press: in future, try to get at least a little bit as angry about things like deporting black British citizens as you are about Cummings going for a drive
6/ The fact that this is the straw that broke the camel's back (and all the other stuff isn't) is grim and depressing

If we're truly to enter a new era of holding power to account, lets make sure it's not just about a government SpAd taking a drive north because...
7/ ... it's unlikely Cummings driving to Durham killed anyone

But do know what absolutely DID kill people?

The Windrush Scandal, Grenfell, the withdrawal of benefits - austerity *alone* caused over 130,000 avoidable deaths
