We were created monogamous. However, permission is given to marry multiple women where, due to our own failings, we fear we cannot deal justly with the needy in our midst out of pure altruism - and even then it is discouraged:

Further, note that God takes the women who would have been among the lowliest of their society, and honours them far above the rest of us.

This wasn't bigamy in the way we might be prone to understand it. The Prophet's wives are the Mothers of the Believers:

Whatever else we might think, the Prophet ﷺ was neither a liar nor a lunatic.

He ﷺ was both sincere and wise to an unparalleled degree.
