I feel like Am*ricans are very attached to this like... idea of normalcy... this idea that nothing truly bad can happen here... I think that’s why we see so much derangement regarding the corinavirus...
Wearing masks = a visible reminder that things are not all right, that the US is not untouched... like they literally cannot process this & so they pretend nothing is happening
You know that sci fi trope where there’s like a megacity or space station or whatever where all the elite live & the main character dreams about making it there? And it’s safe and beautiful and clean and everything is high tech and nobody wants for anything
That’s Am*rica. I think abt it a lot... ofc it always turns out to be evil & oppresive, but the fantasy version of it is what Am*ricans think their country is. We live under a plastic dome & nothing can touch us. No wars, no shortages, no one struggles to survive unless they’re-
-willfully doing something wrong. If a pandemic happens, how can we possibly be dying at such high rates? What is this, some poverty stricken third world country!!
Like they think we have the best tech and the best doctors and the best hospitals, of course we do, this is Am*rica!! It goes against their literal understanding of reality so they have to split their brains in two to cope
