honestly, i’ll bite. i’m asian and privileged. so with that being said... i, and everyone else who is not black, will NEVER truly understand or be able to perceive racial issues in the same way that african american people do.
no matter how much empathy, compassion, or advocation we have for others who are different, there are issues we will never able to genuinely identify with. it’s important to take a step back, reflect, and shift the perspective you’ve lived your entire life in order to progress.
so i bought & read this book. to be straightforward: every human who is not of african american ancestry will never experience the adversity or discrimination that black people in a white nationalist america endure every day. this ofc undoubtedly includes me, an asian woman.
so i want to address the fact that i, personally, have tweeted negative sentiment regarding constantly facing discrimination from black women in downtown atlanta. although it was in a moment of distress, that is absolutely NO excuse. it was wrong and insensitive.
i wanted to make sure i was more knowledgeable and conscious of the racial divide to express an earnest apology. i am sorry. to anyone i’ve offended, i’m sorry. i’m sorry that i highlighted a certain stereotype that depicts black women as aggressive. i take full accountability.
racial equality, social justice, issues surrounding minorities, +more are all things i’m passionate about. i know a simple apology won’t suffice for matters that are as deep and delicate as race, so i want to turn this thread into a list of things i think everyone can learn from.
the book is called So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. it’s a thought-provoking, brutal, yet elegant dissection of black injustices and how we can transform today’s racial landscape. 10/10 recommend & will be adding to this thread regularlyhttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🌻" title="Sunflower" aria-label="Emoji: Sunflower">
