OK, as a long time NASCAR fan, I have to finally state this publicly: the invocation makes me uncomfortable. I& #39;m not religious, so it doesn& #39;t necessarily offend me, but why are we assuming that every NASCAR fan or team employee adheres to some form of Christianity?
I& #39;m not a fan of singing the national anthem prior to sporting events anyways, but that& #39;s not my point. Tradition gets you to a point, but the sport needs to do a much better job promoting inclusivity.
Yes, we get the "Boogity boogity boogity amen" editions that live forever. But then we have THIS one which needlessly inserted political figures that have absolutely nothing to do with the race into the prayer. It really bothers me.
I know I& #39;m going to take a bunch of heat for this opinion. But if I& #39;m going to be true to myself, I can& #39;t ignore this stuff any longer. You want to memorialize fallen soldiers, particularly on THIS day? Absolutely. That& #39;s a fantastic use of your time. They earned it.
But please, can we make a more concerted effort to knock the theological crap off? It& #39;s not necessary. Traditions change when they become outdated. This one? EXTREMELY outdated. And it& #39;s time to change.
I now sit back & await being eviscerated by the loudest parts of NASCAR fans who find this blasphemous. That& #39;s fine. Please make an attempt to be civil in the replies. There are many more issues I chose not to raise in this thread because it is disrespectful, today of all days.
With that, I wish everyone luck today, I& #39;m excited for a good race, and I am grateful for the sacrifices of the men and women of our military who have allowed me the ability to freely criticize the injustices I see in the world.
