If you missed it, @jessicaverdi & I finished our read through of #Dune on Friday! It was so interesting & so much fun, and we've learned a lot & come to appreciate the book in all new ways. Here are a few notes I had on the experience, which I'll keep spoiler-lite. Thread!
Check out all those animal references in chapters when the Baron's around. Almost like he's bestial and not fully human...
Irulan's introductory notes are always illuminating, often foreshadowing. Interestingly she quotes Paul's Dirge for Jamis on pg. 158, more than 100 pages before that character is introduced and what happens... happens. 🗡️
Do NOT play a drinking game based on every utterance of "Terrible Purpose." You will die.
Things that are really important: desert power, the ability to destroy a thing, being human, walking without rhythm, knowing which knife is poisoned, balancing the monarchy/Landsraad/CHOAM.
The chapter with Paul drinking the "special" water is super important, but re-reading it was kind of a let down. Just didn't have that oomph.
Shared consciousness and heightened awareness are described in ways similar to that of fear in the Litany, almost like we should have a healthy fear of those things...
Reading Dune out loud is super fun and enlightening. Highly recommend it with silly voices, especially for those rascal Fenrings and their affected speech patterns.
Something neat happened while listening to @jessicaverdi read toward the end. Shaddam makes a choice to raise a certain flag, & Gurney remarks that it's a sign to watchers above that "this is where the profit is." But it also sounds like "prophet" and that works too!
This edition has a bunch of typos!
Lastly:
1. Being able to see the future kinda sucks.
2. Don't do drugs, kids.
