Judge Hinkle’s decision invalidating Florida’s “pay-to-vote” scheme as an unconstitutional poll tax is one of the best voting rights opinions I’ve ever read. Incredibly thorough, meticulous, fact-laden, and quite stirring. It’s worth your time. https://campaignlegal.org/sites/default/files/2020-05/04916816902.pdf
Perhaps most importantly, Judge Hinkle crafted a remedy that should force the state to tell former felons *how many fines and fees they actually owe.* Incredibly, Florida has no such system in place right now. Hinkle’s last remedy was not as comprehensive. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/10/florida-voting-rights-felons-poll-tax-injunction.html
Judge Hinkle gave Florida an opportunity to devise a system for determining which former felons cannot afford to pay their fines and fees. The government refused—which is insane—so Hinkle created one himself.

Florida doesn’t like it? Too bad. DeSantis and co. missed their shot.
