Perhaps most importantly, Judge Hinkle crafted a remedy that should force the state to tell former felons *how many fines and fees they actually owe.* Incredibly, Florida has no such system in place right now. Judge Hinkle gave Florida an opportunity to devise a system for determining which former felons cannot afford to pay their fines and fees. The government refused—which is insane—so Hinkle created one himself.

Florida doesn’t like it? Too bad. DeSantis and co. missed their shot.
