to my black and jewish friends on the tl: i see you and i hear you, and i’m sorry that your emotional labour is being discredited by some privileged white kids on twitter with a blind presumption two old WASPS "have changed."
this is a time people ought to be listening to your lived experiences and perspectives; it's frankly troubling some people see this instead as a call to debate as though they're owed the luxury of banter about very complex and personal topics that contrib to mod. social problems.
this convo is definitely not the time to justify those shitty things as 'okay at the time' and so can be forgiven.

esp by white/non-jewish ppl. i can't repeat enough how nasty it is watching poc/jewish folks be told by white kids that racist and antisemitic acts are excusable.
doing so not only minimizes the persistence of intergenerational trauma, but minimizes the efforts of activists, scholars, and radicals who have ALWAYS been fighting for rights, liberation, and recovery.

"it was a different time" is an insult to those both past and present.
(and no, blackface wasn't normal/mainstream in the late 1970s. idk where y'all are getting that one but it isn't scholarly sources.

mainstream also doesn't = right, and it's only through a critical lens of the past we progress. so that entire argument is pretty ugly of y'all.)
anyway, sending love and good vibes and understanding onto the tl to all the folks feeling drained from this discourse.

as your local critical theory sociologist, i am disappointed but not surprised at the caucasity of it all
