I suspect part of why INTERSTELLAR had a mixed critical response had to do with expectations. It was hyped as Nolan's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, when really it's his THE ABYSS, an unapologetic sci-fi melodrama.

Like, *everyone* in the movie cries. The theater mostly did too.
