The speech act linked above is makes a good point that it's neoliberalism that is the current underlying cause of ecological havoc. Indeed, with the current economic system dependent on resource exploitation, this is an accurate statement.
The need for an understanding of class promoted by Rawle & Hazell (2020) has been derided by some as classist. Indeed, I expect some people to think that such a statement is 'ecosocialist' and turns off people like me who are ex tory, and those ex lib dems. For me, it doesn't.
I honestly support this! A deeper understanding of class is not just useful to inform our understanding in terms of policy and to interpret knowledge well, but also in terms of obtaining power; so we don't rely on crude stereotypes, esp when it comes to minorities in w/class.
While the piece evidently does call to end the ruling class, it doesn't necessarily call for us to become a Class party appealing to one segment of the country. If it had, it would limit Green reach. It requires for those sympathetic in all classes to achieve a better world.
It's obvious to anyone that a country with 14 million in relative or absolute poverty is not a stable one. We also must recognise their concerns will be food on the table etc, not the worldly threat of climate catastrophe. Only if we understand class, will be able to convince...
...those we wish to help the most that these issues are all connected and only we, together, have any chance to right them.
A word on the want of coalitions with other parties: as the piece above rightly noted, allying with a pro austerity party did harm to us in 2019. On coalitions in general, we can see from the wider world movement examples like Eire, where the Greens cld join a coalition that does
...not benefit the environment or social
justice at all. This is pragmatism for power's own sake, not for the best of the planet. No one is saying winning elections isn't important, but winning them without principles and doing little good is detrimental.
So to sum up: I support the piece above entirely and hope the next leadership takes it into account.
