After being pushed sana by @B3laze I have decided to do alil thread about Record labels. So, they invest in your talent and they get ROI like any other business. Don’t get signed if you can fund your works. If you are not talented, no record label can make you great.
You will have to agree on revenue streams(percentages) on merchandise, shows, royalties endorsements etc. In practice record labels hold 50% master rights, and there is nothing you can do about it.
I have seen commentaries on this app on how some artists are signed and used by labels till they are washed up. Like any other contract, there is privity, and your opinions don’t count when it comes to contract law. Only the parties to the contract matter, and the law.
The timeline for the contract is usually agreed between parties(most artists don’t read their contracts) and this is where the problems emanate. Most producers will do a track for you for around 20-30k A good music video will cost around 150k-350k. Royalties from CMOs are meager.
Our CMOs have been doing equitable distribution of Royalties as opposed to scientific. That’s why artistists have been receiving the same amount regardless of effort, investment and dedication. In my opinion this is unfair. Some deserve more than others🤦‍♂️
Back to record labels, no one will spend such huge amounts of monies in your art without expecting ROI. That’s why you have to be a good and talented artist to be signed. In the western world, your life transforms as soon as you are signed coz they give you advances(monetary)
If you are not creating content as a signed artist then you are not making money for the label. You are not worthy of the investment. I guess this is a good position to end the thread so that part 2 will begin from here. The discourse continues...:👊🏼
