Noor was only 25 when WWII began in 1939.

Born into royalty in India, her father was a Sufi preacher. The Khans moved from Russia to Britain, and then France.

Noor was a talented youngster, playing the harp and piano. She also became fluent in French.

Khan fled to England after France fell at the end of 1940.

She joined the WAAF, and was trained as a wireless operator.

Her linguistic and technical skills would prove useful, as she was posted to the France section of the SOE around 1943.

Noor was the first female radio operator to be sent into occupied France.

Assuming the name Jeanne-Marie Renier, Khan posed as a children's nurse.

To the SOE, she was known by the codename 'Madeleine'.

Despite the risks she faced by being a British spy in occupied France, Khan refused to leave - despite all of the agents in her network being arrested.

Her work became crucial to the war effort - she was the only link between Paris agents and London.

Noor Khan was betrayed by a Frenchwoman and arrested by the Gestapo.

Despite being imprisoned and tortured, she refused to reveal any information.

She attempted escape, but was re-captured and classified as "highly dangerous". This meant solitary confinement.

Khan was transferred to Dachau concentration camp in 1944.

In a final act of defiance, her final word as the German firing squad raised their weapons...

"Liberte"

Noor Khan was posthumously awarded the George Cross, for displaying the most conspicuous courage, both moral and physical, over a period of more than 12 months.
