Ah I see that trash MQ account is flattening all Hong Kong protests as imperialist and right wing with the same brush saying the Chinese experience is not monolithic. Garbage in, garbage out.
It’s true, Hong Kong has a serious problem being xenophobic to Mainland Chinese people, that has to stop. But to insinuate that Hong Kongers are the beneficiaries of colonialism, I don’t think
It is infuriating that people risking their lives for a sovereignty movement, protesting inequality and fighting for rights are being lambasted as being “elite” and imperialist.
Yes, Hong Kong has been misguided in where it has sought right wing international support. And some of its pivot towards BIPOC and police violence solidarity has been fraught and problematic as well.
But to say that the Hong Kong struggle is because they are in the pocket of Western imperialists and that people in HK are the “chosen ones” from the West is a disgusting mischaracterization of a grassroots and increasing movement.
And no, Hong Kongers are not Indigenous. That is true. But the conversation is far more complex and HK has a history and relationship of migration, displacement and yes, colonization.
Also to say that all people who migrated to Hong Kong were displaced rich people from China fleeing communism is absolute bs. There were waves of migration because of the ongoing war, riots and Tiananmen Square.
