Therapy doesn't actually work if you have no intention to change.
I know too many people (my friend/housemate included) who actively do not think they need to change, yet insist that they will "get better after they get professional help" like these professionals aren't going to tell them the same shit they've been told.

like they'll just have a magic wand handy and you'll suddenly WANT to change.

It doesn't work like that.
You need to have the will to change, and the will to accept how things are, now, aren't okay.

Change comes from within.
For me, I do want change.
I actively strive for it.

Some days I slog more than others.
Sometimes I backpedal during flashbacks.

But I want to change. I want to be a better person, with a broader self awareness and mindfulness.

I need therapy to nudge me in the right direction.
Therapy is more or less to provide advice and structure to the recovery YOU do for YOURSELF.

But complaining and expecting the therapist to wave their magic wand and usher out a new you isn't going to work. It's never going to happen.
On that note.
*Tacks this bad boy on*

Another reason therapy might not work. but in line with the rest of the thread: of course therapy isn't going to work if you expect to just vent and be validated and never bother to change. And if you have to do an ounce of work and give up?
Nah.

Nah, of course therapy will not help you if, again, you're not going there to get the tools you need to fix yourself or your situation.

The therapist won't fix it for you.
