The world vitally needs more great coaches

Let's have a look at the field, beginning with what not to do

Therefore, first up is Bobby Knight... https://twitter.com/jeffborzello/status/1264409022012235779
Bad Coach #1

Tip: Don't confuse "winning coach" with good coach

Robert Montgomery Knight (Oct 25, 1940-)

"Bob Knight" on his wikipedia page

Often referred to as "Bobby Knight"

Also as "The General"
What you don't want are:

The 2 -- no quality is more capable of snapping than the 2, and coaching is an opposite process to snapping. Contrary to what the media will tell you.

The 5 -- the 5 is basically miserable. It sees the fault first. Again, this is the opposite of good.
Robert 2-x-6 -- 2ish in how he thinks. Disaster already.

"Bob Knight" = 7, the quality that gets misunderstood

"Bobby Knight" = 7 as well

"The General" = 7-x-5 -- "accident looking for a place to happen" 🙄

Sure enough, Bobby Knight kept basketball "interesting" for decades.
"Robert Montgomery Knight" = 1-x-4 -- if you wanted a good auto mechanic, this would be your guy

DOB: Oct 25, 1940 --> 1 7 5 = 4, the auto mechanic inner nature

"Under the 7" from age 27 to age 54. The 7 can be a very good actor. And that's what we got.

Next up...Nick Saban
Nicholas Lou Saban Jr. (Oct 31, 1951-)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Saban

So, we don't want 2 (snap), 5 (miserable), 7 (poor comms) or 4 (least visionary)

Nick = 1 -- 1 can "see red"
Saban = 2-x-1 -- "lb for lb the worst of the 81 combos"
Total: 2-x-2, 2-destiny.

Total disaster
Nicholas = 7-x-9

"Nicholas Lou Saban Jr." = 5-x-5-destiny

The most intense coach?
The coach most capable of snapping?

His inner potential is so buried, it isn't worth looking at. "Under the 4" if you must know.

#BiggestLoser in the only game that matters -- helping others
Other tidbits, from a 30 second viewing of his wiki page:

(a)
"Saban outspokenly loves Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies and purportedly eats two for breakfast daily."

Define #2quality

Those cakes in the gourmet bakery that have 6 layers, whipped creme and and? 2 quality.
Nick Saban cont'd

(b)
He married Terry Constable

Spoiler: Like attracts like

His full legal name: 5-x-5
Terry = 5-x-5

Constable = 3-x-1 -- you need a 3-x-1 to be able to handle a 2-x-1 (Saban)
Nick Saban cont'd

(c)
Saban and his wife Terry are the co-founders of the foundation Nick's Kids foundation.

What have we been learning about kids organizations these days?

I'm making no direct accusations but mathematically I'm scared at the possibilities.
So now let's have a look at Edward Eugene "Eddie" Sutton (March 12, 1936 – May 23, 2020)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Sutton

Edward = 6-x-1 -- Best of the x-x-1 series, thanks to the 6

Eddie = 1-x-9 -- Has the 1 around ("see red") but this combo can get seriously good at stuff.
Sutton = 9-x-1 -- "Eddie" flipped. The 9 specializes, the 1 gets to the heart of things.

"Eddie Sutton" = 1-x-1, 1-destiny

I'd say this: if he learned to control his temper, this guy would be fantastic.

DOB: 3 3 1 = 7 -- that would help with temper control
"Under a 3" for the first 54 years. Where Bobby & Nick were under the 1. The 3 loves people, loves life. THIS is what you want to impart to your players.

"Edward Eugene Sutton" = 6-x-5 -- this is probably not my ideal coach, but I'll bet he coached better than Bob & Nick.
Was Vincent Thomas Lombardi (Jun 11, 1913 – Sep 3, 1970) the ideal coach?

Vincent = 5-x-6 -- smart
Lombardi = 7-x-2 -- not great
"Vince Lombardi" = 3-x-1 -- slave driver

"Vincent Thomas Lombardi" = 1-x-3 -- the likeable, generous, inspirational total

Winner, but not perfect
Thomas Wade Landry (Sep 11, 1924 – Feb 12, 2000)

Tom = 6-x-3 -- thinks 6ishly (smart), expresses 3ishly (likeable)

Landry = 1-x-2 -- not great

"Tom Landry" = 7-x-5 -- 7 is the actor, loves a costume.

"The guy with the hat"

7-x-5 -- Not a great total
"Thomas Wade Landry " = 5-x-3 -- again with the likeable total (like Vince)

When you glance at his wiki, you see "new"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Landry

5 is the innovator -- 5-x-3 & 5-destiny from "Tom Landry"

DOB: 9 2 7 = 9 -- this is perhaps the ideal birthday numbers.
The 9's positive side is spiritual leader & teacher. It is also the specialist. He was 9 under a 9 from birth to age 27.

2 in the birthday is not bad (like in the name). It gives you empathy. You realize everyone is different. So you're not Vince the pile driver.

Grade: A
"What makes him so goooood?"

William Stephen Belichick (April 16, 1952-)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Belichick

First of all, Bill's dad was an assistant coach. And Bill was named after HoF coach, Bill Edwards.

So "genetics" (i.e. last name)

Belichick = 5-x-8 (same as "Vince")
Bill "learned to break down game films at a young age by watching his father and the Navy staff do their jobs"

Really good coaches are committed to coaching.

Not making money, or shouting. Or eating cream pies.

The President shows what a lifelong commitment can do.
He played football and lacrosse in high school, with lacrosse being his favorite sport.

Later at college he played those two, and squash.

Define #SeriousAthlete

Great coaches have to know everything about everything.

First you get good, then you coach good.
Captain of the lacrosse team. Degree in economics. Surrounded by role models and growing up immersed in sports. Now we're getting there.

After graduation, Bill became a low paid assistant special teams coach. To this day he is known for his emphasis on special teams.
In 1979 he started with the football Giants, and began adding lines to his football resume

- special teams coach
- defensive assistant
- linebackers coach the next year
- became defensive coordinator in 1985
Now under the great Bill Parcells, they won the Super Bowl the next season. Age 34.

"His defensive game plan from the New York Giants' 20–19 upset of the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV (1990) has been placed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame."

#Decent
Bill became the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, and won just 45% of his games from 1991 to 1995.

Failure is needed. Necessary.

Bill went back to Parcells again, as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach with the Patriots, and they made it to the Super Bowl again.
Bill never coached a game for 2 years, because the Jets scored Parcells after Belichick.

Belichick was destined to succeed Parcells as Jets head coach but resigned suddenly. Only to become the head coach of the Patriots a month later.

You have to know when a team sucks.
The Patriots gave Belichick the General Manager title as well as that of head coach.

This is what you dream of. Total creative control.

Belichick lost his first Patriots' head coaching season. That hasn't happened since.

Grade: Tippy Top
"William Stephen Belichick" = 3, just like Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry

The players have got to know that you love them, first and foremost. Or your just a slave driver, and the world already has too many of those.

DOB: 4 7 8 = 9 -- the best Inner Potential for a coach, IMO
