one thing i adore abt hq is there is no One True Way of thinking, lots of characters contradict each other and still thrive happily. my favourite example is the difference between "doing things properly" like kita and sakusa, vs "doing what's fun" like bokuto and hinata +
spikes are fun, but in order to get good at volleyball you have to learn to do serves/recieves as well. but at the same time, whats the point in learning the basics if you can't enjoy it?

and thats where my favourite thing comes in +
while the idea of "having fun" vs "doing it properly" sounds like an either or, every single one of the characters i mentioned learns the other side of the coin too. kita and sakusa truly enjoy(ed) playing volleyball, bokuto and hinata learned to do things properly +
this boils down to a concept that Nekomata of all people spells out, which is one that i believe in wholeheartedly and have believed in all my life:

"好きこそ物の上手なれ"
You become good at things you love.
+
if you love spiking? spike to your hearts content

"you can always bring the net down so you can spike"

eventually you'll reach the point where you love something so much, that even doing it properly becomes a part of your joy.
+
"maybe playing a good game is ultimately worthless if you dont win, but y'know? [...] even if i didn't win i did build a whole lot of muscle. the world can throw anything it wants at me now, i aint afraid."
+
"all i want is to practice and train paying attention to everything [...] and if im lucky, i'll go out thinking i could be done at any time and still be satisfied"
+
"Don't think about what's easy, think about what's fun." "hey guys, are you watching me now? im just a normal ace!"
+
There are so many other examples of this theme throughout hq. Oikawa remembering why he loved vball, hoshi understanding that *because* he loves vball even one mistake could be the end for him, atsumu copying the plays he finds cool then learning to practice properly too
+
The same Nekomata that put receives above all other plays is the one that told kid Kuroo to spike to his hearts content; and an argument that seems like two ends of a spectrum shows itself as one REAL philosophy:

Love what you do so much that you want to do it properly.
