It's quite striking that the "he followed his instincts" comes from the same place as Jacob Rees-Mogg's "common sense" comments about Grenfell. Most people are law-abiding, follow the rules, and have respect for authority 1/
When a firefighter tells you to stay put, you stay put. When the government tells you to stay at home "or people will die", you stay at home. But there are people who believe the normal rules do not apply to them. For them, bending the rules is just "common sense", "instincts" 2/
and, after the event, after great suffering, it is people who DID abide by the rules who are told they were wrong because they didn't follow their "common sense", or "instincts". You could call it gaslighting. At the very least, it is insulting and insensitive to people's pain.
