The biggest issue in journalism these days isn&
#39;t bias. It&
#39;s the lack of diversity. Newsrooms these days skew towards upper-class whites. I think the South Carolina primary shined a light on this issue. I still remember how surprised most reporters were by Biden&
#39;s landslide win.
Reading the reactions from some reporters on Twitter, you would have thought that Biden&
#39;s SC victory was an upset. If we had more reporters who looked like the voters in SC who handed Biden that landslide win, maybe it wouldn&
#39;t have caught so many reporters by surprise.
One of the benefits of coming from an upper-class family is having the connections and the money to pursue careers like journalism. This is part of why I think it&
#39;s so hard for minorities to enter this field. Let&
#39;s face it: most of them don&
#39;t have the connections or the money.
