I have seen the tweets saying "don't shame ppl in the park, improve communication/green space etc."

We may need more green space, but this photo is still white privilege personified, and I feel I need to speak up.

Here's why:

As white people, we benefit from white privilege. When it manifests as badness in our communities, we need to speak up.

For a primer on white privilege, see this excellent graphic from Courtney Ahn Designs on instagram:

You can see that here in twitter form:

One of the major aspects of having white privilege is that we don't have a higher risk of dying due to the colour of our skin.

Compared to white people, BIPOC have higher rates of maternal death, murder by police officers, incarceration, and now, death by COVID-19.

4/
From a young age, black men have to be taught how to behave around cops to avoid getting killed.

Young white people do not have to ponder mortality in the same way. We don't think about all the ways we are more likely to die just by existing in our skin.

5/
And COVID-19 is no exception. The only way to explain the behaviour in these photos is to think that the people in the park have an "I am invincible, this infection isn't going to get me" attitude.

This is a symptom of white privilege.

6/
Furthermore, these people could congregate in the park and totally disregard city/provincial guidelines without any fear or persecution or police brutality.

That this happened the day before Eid, when muslim Canadians are not going to pray just adds insult to injury.

7/
I can't speak for muslim Canadians, but please watch this heart-rending video from @SharkawyMD on what is it like to watch this go on:

8/
On top of this, there have been horrifying account of Asian Canadians, including health care workers in my own circle, who have been targeted by disgusting racists attacks while walking down the street in Toronto.

9/
The fact that white people do not have to endure this is white privilege.

And it is why so many young white Canadians can go to the park, drinking and carrying on without regard for social distancing, without even considering the consequences.
