1. Interesting how many vocal people seem to divide into two polarized camps on the Coronavirus Crisis.
2. There is the "lockdown everything" camp. The folks who send pictures of young people in parks or on beaches, who say they all end up in ICUs or transmitting the virus to the grandparents.
3. Then there are the "open everything back up" folks, who say it's time put jobs and the economy on the front-burner.
4. But the reality is the most people have a more nuanced view. They've figured out how to assess risk for themselves and their families.
5. They know that older people & those with pre-existing conditions are at the biggest risk, so they go to great to insure their older family members are safe.
6. They realize that the virus spreads in crowded indoor spaces, and avoid them - have been avoiding them since before any lockdowns.
7. They realize that they are safer outside and are willing to "socialize" outside and at safe distance with similarly vigilant trusted friends.
8. Young people who live in cramped quarters need to get outside. But most I know and talk to go to great pains never to expose elderly or vulnerable people.
9. I could go on. But the science is becoming clearer and clearer.
10. It is OK to be outside. The risk of transmission is low. Young people have very limited risk from the virus. Let them get on with their lives.
11. Protect the old and the vulnerable. Far, far too many deaths have occurred in nursing homes & in disadvantaged communities. Those must be priorities going forward.
12. While the evidence is still spotty, it seems to indicate that young children are at very low risk for getting seriously ill or transmitting the virus. We should think carefully about how best to open elementary schools for fall, as that could help a lot of peope.
13. Seems to me the evidence points to the need for a more nuanced, tailored approach by geography and for different age groups/ groups with health conditions/vulnerability.
14. On this, we seem to be getting enough good science to guide us.
