hong kong protests- what are they really about? a thread

the hong kong protests are an ongoing series of protests that began in june 2019. the trigger was the extradition bill, which, if enacted, would allow the extradition of wanted criminal suspects/ fugitives to territories including Mainland China and Taiwan.
this led to concerns that the bill would subject hong kong residents and visitors to the jurisdiction and legal system of Mainland China, thereby undermining Hong Kong's autonomy and civil liberties, and infringe on privacy and freedom of speech laws.
despite a huge demonstration on 9 june, the government decided to persist with the bill. protestors gathered outside the legislative council building to stall the reading of the bill on 12 june, causing a standoff with police, where tear gas and rubber bullets were deployed.
long story short, with the refusal of the government to withdraw the bill and the rise in police brutality, protests increased in frequency and intensity, and eventually protesters laid out five demands.
the protests went on throughout the rest of the year, branching out from demonstrations to various events, such as human chains, singing in malls, etc. the problem of police brutality became more and more serious, which only fueled protestors to keep fighting.
after a break due to the coronavirus, the protests recently resumed when china announced the national security law, which essentially violates “one country two systems” and takes away our freedom. i’m too lazy to give details bc there’s a long history, google it if ur interested
we support the protests because we are fighting for hong kong people to enjoy the freedom and rights we deserve. police brutality is also a huge factor in the protests (i’m looking at u, acab friends), so there’s no reason to not support. this is not china- not yet.
