In an attempt to move away from the theme of isolation, I set myself the challenge of finding a film that is the opposite of the previous film. But could there be an opposite of An Angel at My Table that still meets the criteria of #FilmChurch?
It would have to be something loud, masculine, cocksure and reckless; full of motherfuckers yet still a work of art. Today’s #FilmChurch selection is Hal Ashby’s THE LAST DETAIL (1973).
Had I just tasked myself with choosing an Ashby film, I& #39;d still pick #LastDetail. Not that it’s easy choosing just one Ashby film. When I’m in the mood for Hal Ashby, I usually end up watching at least two. But this picture doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. #FilmChurch
At a glance, #LastDetail doesn’t appear to be terribly Ashby-esque, with its veneer of brash, macho hostility. But at its core, it is solid Ashby. It is a fistful of melancholy: rebellious and disenchanted, full of hope and irony...
...It has a deep mistrust of authority, a disdain for bureaucracy, no patience for hypocrisy, and reverence reserved only for peace, love, and really good sandwiches.

There are themes in this film very worthy of discussion, but I don’t want to give too much of the plot away. I may circle back with some spoiler warnings. For now, I suggest watching #LastDetail, and as a companion, check out the excellent 2019 documentary HAL...
...This doc by Amy Scott is a passionate portrait of Ashby and his work. Both films are available on Prime, or consult your favorite streaming guide app for more options. Obviously, support your local video store when/if possible.

Worth Noting: The studio suggested to screenwriter Robert Towne that the story might be more poignant with just 10 “motherfuckers” as opposed to 20. However, if you watch carefully, you& #39;ll notice that not one “motherfucker” is the least bit gratuitous. #FilmChurch #LastDetail
