There hasn't been a scene in a JRPG that has been as devastating to me as this boy in Valkyrie Profile using his only wish in the world to reunite the girl he loved with her parents and the wish interpreting as her having to die for it. And he never knew this happened.

Her parents are dead, so the only way to reunite her with her parents was for her to die too. Fuyuki only wanted for her to find her parents again, and he spent the rest of his life thinking that she found happiness

It's fascinating because Valkyrie Profile is about the struggles of the world below, of people hurting each other to survive. That such a young boy would make such a selfless wish just for it to end up so tragically is the height of bitter irony.

Valkyrie Profile is really just a collection of tragedies you will never recover from.
