First, on the claim that people could just “print thousands of forgeries,” you have to return mail ballots in an official envelope that is bar coded. This both provides a record that your vote was received and prevents duplicate voting. 2/

Second, in virtually all states, you have to sign the return envelope. Election officials can then match your signature to the one they have in their records. Here’s how the process works in Arizona. 3/

In fact, a many multitude bigger problem than “fraud” is that not all states give you a chance to cure a perceived signature mismatch like Minnesota does (see below ). Which is something all states should do or Congress should mandate. 4/

Congress also should provide funding to make sure that states have the resources they need to deal with the higher number of mail ballots this fall and do it right. The House has already done that. But in the Senate, things have run into a familiar roadblock. 5/

Because the reality is that every swing state or possible swing state (except Texas - for now) already lets any voter request a mail ballot with no excuse or justification needed. And out simply, lots more people are going to be voting by mail. 6/
