[Thread] @dhh's Medium account is a goldmine

1. The cognitive dissonance between “I sell life insurance” & “I believe I’m healing the world” is so loud that it invites intervention.

Someone to slap you across the face, shake you violently, and yell “Snap out of it, mate."
2. Nobody these days is content to merely put their dent in the universe.

No, they have to fucking own the universe. It’s not enough to be in the market, they have to dominate it.

It’s not enough to serve customers, they have to capture them.
3. Examine and interrogate your motivations, reject the money if you dare, and startup something useful.

A dent in the universe is plenty.

Curb your ambition.
4. You know what’s cool?

Getting to work at 9, putting in eight solid hours, and then being done by 5.

There’s nothing stodgy or uncool about having a reasonable workday that allows for a workout at 7:30am or playing with your kids at 5:30pm.
5. A game worth winning:

The one played with yourself for your own betterment.

Not the one played against others, measured against them.

Screw that game.
6. Set out to do good work

Be fair in your dealings with customers, employees, reality

Leave a lasting impression on the people you touch, & worry less (or not at all) about changing the world

Chances are you won’t. If you do, it’s not going to be because you said you would.
7. Every startup on the cover of a magazine has a hockey-stick chart to flaunt.

Yes, disruption is driven by such violent expansion, & the world needs some disruption some of the time.

But for the other 360 days out of the year, it also needs is some modest, linear growth.
8. It’s hard to change if you’re stuck in the same social orbit.

There’s a gravitational force that pulls you into repeating the same circular pattern over and over again.

What allowed me to change and prosper was the freedom to grow apart & lose touch with people.
9. The intrinsic lure of the work is diminished by the extrinsic reception to the work.

Waiting for the crowd to please the work rather than the work to please the mind.
